1. Nay In a single day

Fancy exploring Béarn without a car? Head to Nay, a charming market town where you can gently discover its heritage, local craftsmanship and way of life.

On Tuesdays, it’s impossible to resist the atmosphere of its large market, an unmissable event where you can feel the heart of the town beating. Between strolling under the arcades, take the time to visit the Maison Carrée, a true heritage gem, followed by the Beret Museum, which tells a unique story of local history.

To extend the experience, Vélosud offers a lovely cycling getaway in the surrounding area.

Take one of the two Transports Nouvelle-Aquitaine buses, departing from Pau SNCF station, line 534, getting off at the Amphithéâtre stop in Nay. Timetables and fares can be found here.

2. Monein In the heart of the Jurançon AOC

In Monein, visitors can enjoy a blend of heritage, walks and a relaxed way of life. You simply cannot miss the Church of Saint-Girons, the jewel of the village and one of the most remarkable in Béarn, known in particular for its spectacular roof structure.

The village is also ideal for a fun family adventure with the Terra Aventura trail ‘Le Jurançon du succès ’, an original way to discover the area whilst having fun. And for those who enjoy the great outdoors, several walks start from the centre, allowing you to extend your visit at your own pace through the countryside and vineyards.

3. Salies-de-Béarn City of Salt

In Salies-de-Béarn, you can explore the town’s unique character as you wander through its charming narrow streets. Known as the ‘city of salt’, the town captivates visitors with its distinctive heritage, elegant atmosphere and history closely linked to its salt water, which is far more concentrated than seawater.

We love to stroll around Place du Bayaà, admire the architecture of the old town and continue our walk to the spa district, which plays a key role in the town’s identity.

For a family visit, the Terra Aventura trail “Salies, in the land of ancient seas ” offers a fun walk of around 3 km through the town.

And to soak up the local atmosphere, the market brings the town centre to life on Thursday mornings. A wonderful stop to discover Béarn in a different light, combining heritage, a relaxed way of life and local expertise.

4. Orthez

In Orthez, exploring the town combines heritage, strolls and the atmosphere of a historic city. Once the capital of Béarn, the town invites you to wander amongst its must-see attractions, from Moncade Castle to the Jeanne d’Albret Museum, not forgetting the Pont Vieux, the town’s iconic bridge over the Gave de Pau.

For a family visit, the Terra Aventura trail offers a fun way to explore the town, combining puzzles with heritage discovery.

On Tuesday mornings, the market adds a tasty and friendly touch to your getaway, perfect for sampling a few local specialities before continuing your stroll.

In summer, you can enjoy supervised swimming, relax by the water’s edge or try out the various outdoor and water sports on offer.

With its lush green surroundings and stunning views of the Pyrenees, Les Ô Kiri is the perfect place for both relaxation and socialising. It’s the ideal spot to cool off, have fun and enjoy a convivial day by the lake, in a holiday atmosphere just a few kilometres from Pau.
