Each place has its own atmosphere

Pau is a city of places and atmospheres to discover, depending on the time of day (or night) and the mood of the moment. From the Hédas district to the Boulevard des Pyrénées, from the Palais Beaumont to the Château, each era has left its mark, creating a city with many faces: history meets anecdote, while a sense of welcome and conviviality weave a thread that you’ll enjoy following.

1. Boulevard des Pyrénées Plus belle la vue

Time for a break. Sitting on a terrace, having a drink or lunch, facing the Pyrenees, is enough to make you happy. It has to be said that the panorama is not half-measured! For almost 2 km, between the Parc Beaumont and the Château de Pau, you can contemplate 150 km of the Pyrenees.

2. The castle Heart of the medieval quarter

The town’s castle and medieval quarter are unmistakable royal landmarks. Capital of the Kingdom of Navarre, birthplace of the good King Henri IV, Protestant town of Jeanne d’Albret, Pau has left its mark on French history. The medieval quarter and its narrow streets will give you a glimpse of another time.

3. Place Clemenceau Shopping corner

From here, you can browse the shops, cafés and restaurants of the city center. Rue Joffre and Rue des Cordeliers for independent and designer boutiques. Rue Henri IV and Rue Louis Barthou for chic shop windows. Rue Serviez and Rue Foch for big-name retailers and the Palais des Pyrénées, which opens onto the boulevard in the shape of a belvedere.

4. Le Gave de Pau The station district

From the royal residence, head for the banks of the river Gave. Its tumultuous waters are ideal for whitewater sports, which are practised right here in the heart of the city… The Gave runs beneath the ramparts of Pau, welcoming you as you leave the station at the foot of the funicular railway.

Car-free

Use the parking lots for parking and the buses. By bike or on foot, you’ll enjoy strolling around and taking in the sights and sounds.

Architecture

Keep your eyes open. From architectural pearls to exceptional viewpoints, each neighborhood offers its own share of beauty, more or less hidden.

6. The Hédas district Always popular

This former working-class district of Pau was built in the lower town around the old stream that gave it its name. Now rehabilitated, it has become a lively, poetic place for a stroll with the family or a day out with friends. A luminous scenography sets the scene for a dreamlike stroll!
