Pau Pyrénées Tourisme

Our must-haves So you don’t miss a thing in Pau Pyrénées

Because we know that when you visit us, you’ll want to start with the essentials… So we’ve put together our list of must-see places.
And when you arrive here, do make sure to soak up the bustling atmosphere of the market halls, snap a photo against our breathtaking Pyrenean backdrop, or let yourself be swept away by the unique atmosphere of the Stade du Hameau…Because that’s what holidays are all about: meeting people, feeling the excitement, tasting new flavours, sharing moments and enjoying new experiences; and we’re sure we’ll love surprising you. Let’s get started with the round-up!

1. Pau Castle The cradle of Henry IV

This is the remarkable story of a simple hunting lodge that was fortified with wooden stakes to become a stronghold; and which gave rise to the town’s name: ‘Pau’ (meaning ‘stake’ in the Béarn dialect). From the top of its promontory, ten centuries gaze down upon you! Each historical era would add its own architectural touch, enrich its collections, and embellish its parks and gardens. But what we love to remember above all else is the joyous event of an evening in December 1553, when, amidst the splendour of the château, a certain Henri III of Navarre—the future King Henri IV—was born. His royal cradle, shaped like a tortoise shell, can still be seen during tours of the château!

Remarkably well-maintained, set in its lush green surroundings, this venerable residence still overlooks the town and the Gave river, facing the majestic Pyrenees. So, as you’ll have gathered, here in our region, the jewel in our crown is the château!

2. Boulevard des Pyrénées Our horizons in Pau

The Boulevard des Pyrénées is THE quintessential promenade in Pau. Stretching from the foot of the castle to Beaumont Park, it’s a two-kilometre stroll that we’re particularly fond of here.
On the town side, the Belle Époque façades and public gardens reflect the romantic side of the city’s history. A few more contemporary buildings follow, and before you know it, you’re already at Parc Beaumont. There’s no shortage of café and restaurant terraces lining the route, and we love to relax there at the slightest hint of sunshine.
To the south, the view is spectacular: 150 kilometres of Pyrenean panorama unfolds before you against a backdrop of azure sky. The scenery changes with every season and every hour of the day; you’re looking out over a listed panorama: the horizons of Pau.

3. The market halls Pau’s belly

The Pau market halls reallydo have it all: top-quality produce, a bright and modern building, first-class artisans and producers… but that’s not all! It’s also a place for socialising, culture, celebration and sharing, where the air is filled with the scent of local produce and a love of good food.
Here, we love to wander amongst the producers’ stalls, sampling farmhouse cheeses, tucking in with friends at the oyster bar, sip fine wines and savour delicious tapas with mates at aperitif time, or even enjoy the panoramic terrace whilst listening to a great concert. An unrivalled atmosphere that we highly recommend!

4. Lescar Medieval and Jacquerian

Just a few minutes from Pau lies Lescar. An ancient town perched on a hill, it overlooks the plain and offers a superb vantage point over the Pyrenees. The beating heart of the fortified town is the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, which houses the tombs of the Kings of Navarre. But what you may not know is that the ancient Lescar, Bénéharnum, gave its name to our beautiful region: Béarn.

Ideally situated on the Way of St James, this ancient episcopal town is a welcome stopover on the Via Tolosa, before tackling the steeper, more rugged valleys and roads of the ascent into the Pyrenees.

Whether you’re passionate about history, beautiful architecture, charming tales and legends, or great journeys, you’re most welcome in Lescar!

5. Jurançon Wines and hillsides

Here, when we talk about Jurançon, it’s worth clarifying: are we referring to the town, the terroir or the wine? All three are, of course, closely intertwined. Firstly, there’s the town on the southern outskirts of Pau, which gave its name to one of the very first national AOCs (1936); then there’s the undulating terroir, with its numerous hillsides—some with steep slopes—facing the Pyrenees; and finally, the wine itself – a golden nectar available in sweet or dry styles, but always delightfully fruity. It accompanies every joyful moment in our lives; to be enjoyed in moderation, but always with equal pleasure!
