How can I get to Lake Baudreix from Pau without a car?

Take the 534 bus from Pau railway station to the ‘Lycée’ stop in Baudreix. Allow about 25 minutes by bus, followed by a 10-minute walk to reach the lake.

A day at Lake Baudreix No car!

From late June to late August, just a few kilometres from Pau, I discover Baudreix, a natural retreat where I quickly find myself taking the time to slow down.
Here, water is everywhere: in the lake, the Gave de Pau, or along the paths winding through the natural landscapes.

The different faces... From the Gave de Pau

To start my day off gently, I set off on the heritage trail dedicated to the Gave de Pau.

As I walk along the trail, the information boards and various vantage points help me gain a better understanding of the history of this river, which has shaped the landscapes of the Béarn region for centuries. I walk alongside the wetlands, natural riverbanks and unspoilt areas, discovering the rich biodiversity that surrounds the river.

I take the time to walk, observe and enjoy the tranquillity of the surroundings. It’s a lovely way to start the day before heading back to the hustle and bustle of the lake in the afternoon.

Fishing enthusiastsAnd by nature

Fishing enthusiasts can stop off at the Baniou Fishing Pier, a site on the banks of the Gave that has been developed and awarded the ‘Tourisme & Handicap’ label. Brown trout, rainbow trout, minnows and gudgeon inhabit these waters, which are popular with local anglers. Access is free, provided you hold a fishing licence.

SaligueThe must-know word

In Baudreix, you might hear people talking about the ‘saligue’.

This local term refers to the vegetation lining the banks of the Gave de Pau: willows, poplars, wet meadows and small tributaries make up this landscape, which is characteristic of the Béarn region.

I'm having lunch By the lake

I settle down either in the shade of a tree, by the water’s edge or in one of the designated areas around the lake. It’s the perfect time to take a proper break, enjoy the peace and quiet, and soak up the surroundings before carrying on with the day.

If I fancy a sit-down meal, I choose the Restaurant du Lac at the Baudreix Leisure Centre. I take a seat overlooking the water, with the Pyrenees as a backdrop, and enjoy some simple, homely food. A welcome gourmet break before moving on to the afternoon’s activities.

Freshness and thrills! Early this afternoon

Why not give the water ski lift or the Water Jump a go?

Thrill-seeking option: Try your hand at wakeboarding or water skiing on the water ski lift, and glide across the lake.

Fancy taking it a step further? Head to the Water Jump and its various ramps to build up speed before landing in the water!

Our tip: choose the cable lift for the sheer joy of gliding across the water and the Water Jump for a real adrenaline rush… or combine the two for a day packed with thrills.

For a more laid-back option: make the most of the swimming and relaxation area. Here, you can settle down by the water’s edge, with your feet in the sand and your gaze fixed on the mountains! If you’re with children, the play areas let you extend the day at their own pace.

Please note: These activities are only available from the end of June.

Between riding the ski lift and jumping off the Water Jump, I really got into it: loads of fun, a few splashes and, above all, a strong urge to do it all again! I loved it…

After a refreshing day spent alternating between activities and relaxing, it’s time to head back to Pau.
