Description
Renée, the Marquise de Sade, lives in seclusion at her mother’s home with her sister, while her husband is imprisoned for his writings and scandals. In their salon, the women receive guests and debate the case of this agitator. Each projects a radically different vision onto this absent man—monster, genius, perfect lover, or simply a scandal to be hushed up.
Renée is torn between her marital loyalty and the shame her husband inspires in her. The conversation heats up, revealing the desires, fears, and contradictions of these 18th-century women on the eve of the Revolution. As their conversation unfolds, the masks come off, revealing their true feelings and repressed desires.
