Description

A formidable enemy of the African Army, Emir Abd el-Kader and his smala were imprisoned in France, first at Fort Lamalgue in Toulon in the Var department, then for six and a half months at the Château de Pau, the birthplace of Henry IV, in 1848, in the Béarn region. Emir Abd el-Kader sparked great enthusiasm, sympathy, and fascination among the people of Pau. This was far from the image of a ruthless, fanatical, and barbaric warlord spread by the propaganda of the time. His presence transformed the city, captivating the people of Pau as well as the many European, Swiss, and British residents. A lecture by Miki Kilali
