Description
The Church of Saint-Jacques in Pau is a Neo-Gothic church located in the heart of Pau, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, near the city center and the Les Halles neighborhood. Its history dates back to 1651, when the Cordeliers built a chapel on this site for pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela. The current building was constructed between 1861 and 1868 by architect Émile Loupot. Inside, the light-filled nave, the pointed arches, the choir adorned with marouflage paintings, and the columns decorated with seashells evoke the connection to Saint James. Weakened by the elements, the spires were dismantled in 2001 and then restored in 2012. Today, the Church of Saint-Jacques is a landmark of Pau’s religious and architectural heritage.
