Our walk begins near the Boulevard des Pyrénées, at Parc Beaumont, the perfect English-style garden with marvellous centenary trees of rare species: California redwoods, Himalayan cedars and magnolias. In 1878, leisure facilities were added to transform it into a vibrant space that would appeal to English tourists and sportsmen: the bandstand, the lake, the Pyrenean garden and the open-air theatre, tennis courts, a polo pitch, a cricket pitch and a jeu de paume court. Villa Beaumont, inherited from the poet Anne de Noailles, was converted into a Winter Palace, and later a conference centre…
Head towards the Chapelle des Réparatrices (the Conservatoire de musique et de danse’s auditorium), then turn right onto Avenue San Carlos and left onto Avenue Nitot.
Marvel at the beauty of the Pau skyline. The balustrade, like a thread of Ariadne, stretches from the Boulevard des Pyrénées all the way to Trespoey. The promenade was meant to continue this far, but the high cost of the works brought the project to a halt.
