Lacommande The House of Jurançon

Just half an hour from Pau, the Maison du Jurançon in Lacommande offers a chance to immerse yourself in the Jurançon hillsides. Here, the vine reigns supreme and Jurançon wine is known as the ‘wine of kings’ and the ‘king of wines’. It’s a wonderful stop-off in Lacommande to discover the Jurançon appellation and its wines alongside passionate local winemakers. The independent winegrowers organise numerous events, notably the Jurançon Wine Route, to showcase the region’s exceptional wine-growing and winemaking heritage.

Getting there

Jurançon Showcase

Established in 2006, the Maison du Jurançon brings together nearly 150 wines from the estates and vineyards of the Jurançon AOC. Whether dry, fruity or sweet white wines, the appellation is well represented within the cool surroundings of a Béarn farmhouse.

In 1986, a group of young winegrowers decided to set up an association to promote their estates and wines: La Route des Vins du Jurançon was born. With a view to sustainable development and showcasing their expertise, they subsequently established the Maison des Vins. Today, the Jurançon Wine Route brings together more than 60 independent winegrowers who produce, market and sell their own wines.

The Jurançon Experience Wine Tasting Experience

Push open the door to the Maison du Jurançon and step into the fascinating world of this golden nectar.
From the terrace to the kitchen, every room reveals a secret: the geology of the vineyard, the Pyrenean climate, the Petit and Gros Manseng grape varieties… You’ll observe, listen and experience everything that shapes this iconic wine of the Béarn.
Both fun and sensory, this one-hour tour is perfect for enjoying with family or friends. And to round off the experience, a tasting awaits you at the end of the visit. A lovely way to sample Jurançon… even before you raise your glass!

The Jurançon Terrace

Every year, the association of independent winegrowers and vintners organises numerous cultural events centred on wine, such as the Grape Harvest Festival (from September to December), the Open Day (the second Sunday in December), and, in April, ‘La Terrasse du Jurançon’, a festive highlight of life in Pau where Jurançon flows freely.

The earliest records of the Jurançon vineyards date back to antiquity. It was during the Middle Ages that the historic heart of the vineyards became established around the Chapelle de Rousse. It was at this time that the word ‘Juransoo’ first appeared in written records!

A group of enthusiasts

Since 1986, the winegrowers united under the “Route des vins” – now renamed “Les Vignerons du Jurançon” – have sought to breathe new life into the appellation. Independent winegrowers and producers have joined forces to promote Jurançon as an authentic, high-quality wine.

They have pooled their resources to set up their own analysis laboratory, whilst fostering mutual support and collaboration amongst themselves. Their aim is to raise the profile of Jurançon’s dry and sweet wines and make them better known.

Commandery and silence

Since the 12th century, Lacommande has welcomed pilgrims on the Via Tolosona, travelling from Arles to Santiago de Compostela. This refuge, situated between Lescar and Oloron-Sainte-Marie, offers them a place to rest, eat and tend to their wounds.

Today, this site has become a venue for exhibitions and cultural exchange. It offers a complete immersion in the world of wine. It’s an opportunity to enjoy a unique tour of the Jurançon region, combining wine tourism with slow tourism.

At La Commanderie, an extraordinary experience awaits you: immerse yourself in the total silence of the ‘Chambre sourde’ and discover what absolute silence feels like, before heading off to enjoy a glass of Jurançon at the Maison du Jurançon. Two experiences you won’t forget in a hurry.
