In the Middle Ages, hunting was one of the preferred activities of the great lords, and gave rise to a number of works on venery. Gaston Fébus, Count of Foix and Viscount of Béarn, was responsible for the most illustrious of these. Composed between 1387 and 1391, the Livre de chasse was dedicated to Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy. The author describes a wide range of animals, including stags, reindeer, fallow deer, ibex, roe deer, foxes and hounds.
