Description
Despite their mysterious origins and disputed genealogy, the Fatimids were one of the most brilliant dynasties in the Muslim world. Their reign in Egypt, from 969 to 1171, had a profound impact on the country?s history. Cairo became a capital of power, pomp and cultural refinement, at the heart of a great Mediterranean power.
This period was marked by intense artistic creativity. Architecture, textiles, jewelry, ivory, cut rock crystal and ceramics all bear witness to remarkable craftsmanship. Produced for the court, the population and for export, these objects spread the influence of Fatimid Cairo as far as Sicily, southern Italy and Syria. Crusaders and pilgrims even brought works back to the West, which were later transformed into Christian objects. With the Fatimids, Egypt regained an influence comparable to that of the Pharaonic era.
