Pau?s historic district stretches around the Château de Pau, between the narrow streets of the old town and the squares just off the Boulevard des Pyrénées. Here, everything invites you to stroll: first to approach the château and the birthplace of Henri IV, then to look up at the old facades, including many half-timbered houses, and the former Parlement de Navarre (opposite the château), a major witness to the history of the Béarn region.
From Place de la Déportation, in the heart of the district, you can look out over the Pyrenees mountain range: a breathtaking panorama of heritage and horizon. Don't miss the Pic du Midi d'Ossau.
Along the alleyways, small restaurants and terraces liven up the area in the cooler hours.
Emblematic of Pau, the Château district is best explored on foot, and is easily reached by the funicular, a free link between the station and the city center.
