Museums Bringing art and history to life

1. National Castle Museum 1000 years of history

The chateau overlooks the town and the river Gave, and is the setting for the legend of “Bon Roy Henri” and the kingdom of Navarre. Restored in the 19th century and classified as a National Museum, it opens onto 1000 years of history. You’ll be amazed by the quality and richness of its decoration. It features one of the finest collections of Gobelins tapestries from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

The green lung at the heart of the city of Pau, a 22-hectare national estate surrounds the Château de Pau. A remnant and heir to the immense estate of the Kings of Navarre, it lends itself to beautiful walks in the shade of its remarkable trees.

From the boulevard des Pyrénées, the Renaissance gardens and the kitchen garden, small squares perfectly aligned, the Basse Plante and the Parc du Château follow one another. They’re a little work of art in themselves!

2. Museum of Fine Arts Always on the move

The second-largest museum in Aquitaine, Pau’s Musée des Beaux Arts jealously guards a masterpiece by Degas: “The Cotton Office in New Orleans”, surrounded by rich collections. The paintings on display will take you on a journey through the Flemish, Dutch, Italian, Spanish and French schools, from the 15th to the 20th century. Not to mention the temporary exhibitions that regularly introduce you to new artists!

A pure product of 1930s architecture, it has recently been linked to the École Supérieure d’Art Pyrénées Pau Tarbes by a wave of glass that opens up an original perspective towards the city. During your visit, be sure to take a stroll through Square Bosquet, now Jardin de Sculptures!

3. Parachute Memorial Museum A school, a museum, a memorial

Since 1963, in Lons, north of Pau, the Airborne Troops School has been training paratroopers from the 3 armies and the Gendarmerie. The parachute museum recounts the military adventures of these men from the Second World War to the present day. This is a legendary land of French military parachuting, the nest where many of the soldiers who made their first jump were trained!

In 1964, a memorial was erected on the Camp d’Astra at the entrance to the military academy; it is now part of the museum.

4. Museum of Resistance and Deportation To remember

Created on the initiative of former Resistance fighters and deportees, this museum keeps alive the memory of the victims and pays tribute to those who fought in the dark hours of the Second World War.

A lesson in history and courage that leaves its mark on the mind, through testimonials, documentaries, objects, posters and exhibitions. A lesson in history as much as a lesson in life that perpetuates the memory and crosses generations.

The Musée de Lescar is located in the heart of the historic city, in the former cellars of the episcopal palace. Here you can discover the history of the 1st capital of Béarn, the ancient Beneharnum. Episcopal capital and ancient history have left a legacy of artifacts and ruins that bear witness to this rich past: bronze jewelry and vases dating from the Iron and Bronze Ages, 4th-century mosaics, sigillated ceramics and everyday objects…

7. Giant's Tour At the heart of the Grand Loop

The Tour des Géants is the first open-air museum dedicated to the Tour de France and its heroes. In the heart of the Bois-Louis, on the site of the former Pau velodrome, where the finishes used to take place, you can trace the history of the world’s most famous cycling race. Each yellow totem represents a performance by a Tour de France cyclist. The totem, equipped with an audio system, takes you back to the heart of an edition thanks to a QR code.
