Tragedy. Léontès, King of Sicily, wrongly suspects his wife Hermione of infidelity with her childhood friend, King Polixène of Bohemia. Mad with jealousy, Leontes imprisons Hermione, rejects their newborn daughter, Perdita, and causes the death of their son and, he believes, of Hermione.
Comedy. Perdita is taken in and raised by an old shepherd in Bohemia. Sixteen years later, she falls in love with Florizel, the son of Polixenes. The Bohemian king comes to spy on the young lovebirds during the joyous sheep-shearing festival, before ransacking the place and forbidding the marriage. The pair decide to flee to Sicily, where the truth will come out? Resolution.
