Our extraordinary gardens City of nature

Green paradises

In Pau, nature meets the city: parks and gardens that will surprise you with their richness and extraordinary trees! As soon as you leave the station, the first thing you see is a setting planted with palm trees. A “wow” effect, a reminder that the exceptional climate here allows for the exotic. Pau has been passionate about its gardens for centuries, and has been proudly displaying its 4-flower “Villes et villages fleuris” label since 1985.

1. Domaine du Chateau From the Middle Ages to the present day

We love this park, which has stood the test of time. Do the joggers who stroll through it today imagine that it was once the kingdom of Henri IV’s great-grandmother, Catherine of Navarre? Since the Middle Ages, the gardens and royal park have been the constant concern of the Viscounts of Navarre. Henri IV himself had plants imported for his Parisian gardens. The small medieval garden, the Basse-Plante and the national park (22 ha) are the remains of these royal gardens, which were recognized as the “most beautiful (…) anywhere in Europe”.

Plane trees, beeches, elms, magnolias, oaks, boxwoods, Atlas cedars and redwoods offer a walk through the centuries, with a beautiful view of the château, the south of Pau and the river Gave.

2. Beaumont Park The spirit of the English garden

We take you to a public garden designed in the 19th century for the pleasure of strolling. This English-style garden invites you to travel with its trees of exotic origins and names: redwoods from California, cedars from the Himalayas, chestnuts from India and the Balkans, trees of Judah, araucaria from Chile…

This romantic park has an incredible charm! In fine weather, its outdoor theater hosts free concerts. A paradise for families and lovers alike!

3. Square George V and Boulevard Aragon Window on the Pyrenees

In 1930, this small square was created as an extension of Boulevard Aragon, which links Place Clémenceau in the heart of town to Boulevard des Pyrénées. It was designed as a window onto the Gabizos peak, a small jewel of symmetry framed by the imposing Aragon and Ossau buildings.

4. Stade Tissié Park and stadium in one

Stade Tissié, Bois Louis or Parc de la Gare for the locals. This vast expanse of forest near the river gave was transformed with the arrival of the train. Becoming Parc de la Gare in 1901, it boasted a chalet (home to the Véloce Club and the velodrome), croquet courts, a boulodrome and a stadium. Both a wooded park and a sports venue, the Tissié stadium welcomes walkers as well as basketball and pétanque players.

Nature

We love, you love this beautiful nature… So please respect it:

  • Garbage and cigarette butts in the garbage cans.
  • Flowers in their green bower!
In the family

Our parks are ideal for family outings. The playground equipment is sure to delight children. Create happy moments for yourself!

By bike

Our parks and gardens offer you a car-free escape into nature. There’s no need to leave Pau: just get on your bike and off you go to enjoy the great outdoors!

With my dog

A meeting place for canine owners, parks and gardens are a delight for Medor. Don’t forget your little bags to pick up his droppings, and keep him on a leash for everyone’s safety!

5. The Kofu-Nitot garden Japanese serenity

The Kofu garden, created in 1977 between Square Besson and Villa Nitot, is a tribute to Pau’s twinning with the Japanese town of Kofu. Its architect created a Japanese enclave in the heart of Pau. Cypresses, bonzai spruces, maples and Japanese cherry trees sit harmoniously alongside azaleas and camellias. The gentle trickle of water in its bed of Pyrenean stone creates an atmosphere of meditation and serenity.

6. Lawrence Park Pau's most famous cedars

Parc Lawrence, north of Pau, is the setting for the villa of the same name. Its majestic Atlas and Lebanese cedars are among the most beautiful trees in the city! Close to the Foirail, a haven of peace and nature in the heart of the city!
