A terroir

Sun-drenched hillsides, a temperate climate, craftsmen in love with their land – that’s all it took for Jurançon wines to become a minor miracle. Cultivated at altitudes of between 4 and 500 m, facing south and south-east on terraced or amphitheatrical slopes, the vines benefit from mild winters and temperate summers, with plenty of water and sunshine, and are subject to the influence of the Pyrenees, which send a warm, dry wind called the foehn.

A long history The Béarn brand

Jurançon has left its mark on the history of Béarn. Cultivated by the Romans since antiquity on the hillsides of Béarn, it is mentioned as early as the Middle Ages under the name Juransoo. It became famous thanks to the Viscounts of Navarre and the presence of Henri IV, whose grandfather, according to legend, made him drink a few drops. In the 16th century, the princes of Béarn introduced the notion of “cru” according to the value of the plots. Almost five centuries later, the vineyard remains a strong symbol of the region, where 25 communes share the 1000-hectare appellation.

To qualify for Appelation d’Origine Contrôlées status, only five grape varieties are accepted: Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng are the basic varieties, plus Courbu, Lauzet and Camaralet. Late harvests are carried out exclusively with Gros and Petit Manseng grapes.

More than a wine An art of living

Know-how and passion

The wines of Jurançons are renowned for their frank, lively taste with a smooth finish.

  • Blanc sec (dry white): green hues, aromas of honey and exotic fruits, spicy with a recognizable liveliness.
  • Blanc moelleux: golden color, aromas of honey, pineapple, passion fruit, citrus, cinnamon and cloves. For late-harvest wines, candied fruit flavors.

Jurançon producers are passionate about their work. Here, the grapes are still harvested by hand, and the wine is aged in vats or barrels with the utmost care. They’re the ones who talk about it best, so come and meet them. Whether you’re an independent or a member of the Gan wine cooperative, they’ll share their wines and their passion with you!
